Dr. Lindborg has been working with mining related issues since 1978. He is CEO for the Sotkamo Silver AB. He has established and built up Sotkamo Silver AB in Sweden and its subsidiaries Sotkamo Silver Oy in Finland. Dr. Lindborg has been lecturing as a professor in Mineral Entrepreneurship at Oulu University and Luleå University of Technology during 2010-2013. Before Sotkamo Silver Dr. Lindborg acted as CEO of Endomines AB. He is one of the founding entrepreneurs of Endomines, one of the first junior mining companies in Finland. Dr. Lindborg founded industrial mineral company Kalvinit Oy, which developed the Kälviä ilmenite project through pre feasibility study before the company was merged to Endomines AB. Lindborg has been participating in development of the Björkdal gold mine and Pahtavaara gold mine as a strategic and environment consultant in the beginning of 1990’s. Dr. Lindborg has been responsible for the final feasibility studies of Pampalo Gold mines, Silver Mine and Kalvinit ilmenite mine projects. He has a long experience about gathering financing, developing and managing exploration and mining projects in Nordic countries.

Markku Wilenius

Markku Wilenius is professor of futures studies in Turku University Business School. He is also Unesco Chair in Learning Society and Futures of Education. He has worked over 20 years with futures studies. In 2015 he co-founded Turku Complex Systems Institute at the University of Turku.  In recent years his research interest include understanding socio-economic long-term waves, future of financial industry, future of forest industry and future of non-hierarchical organizations. Hannele Pokka serves as Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of the Environment in Finland. She is the highest-ranking public servant within the Ministry. Hannele is also Docent of Environmental Law at the University of Lapland. Previously, she has served as governor of the Province of Lapland and the minister of justice. From 1979 to 1994, Hannele was a Member of Parliament. She has special interest and expertise in Arctic issues and has held the position, for example, of chair of the Barents Regional Council and the Northern Forum. She holds a doctoral degree in environmental law. She is an honorary doctor of environment and forestry at the University of Eastern Finland (previously, University of Joensuu). The Ministry of the Environment is responsible for preparing matters to be submitted for consideration by the Government and Parliament, such as matters concerning communities, the built environment, housing, biodiversity, sustainable use of natural resources and environmental protection. The Ministry encourages cooperation in all its work and plays a leading role in national efforts to safeguard biodiversity, promote sustainable development, and secure a good living environment for both current and future generations.

Heikki Karppimaa, M.Sc. in industrial economy, is Oulun Energia Oy’s fuel manager. He supervises the acquisition of the company’s fuels and burnable waste for their eco power plant, as well as the treatment of ashes produced by power plants. His tasks also include administration of supply agreements and management of fuel and waste logistics. Previously he worked for Turveruukki Oy for 33 years in different functions, and as CEO between 2011–2017. Oulun Energia is a city-owned public limited company dealing with fuel production and the production, sales and distribution of electricity and district heating, along with various other services, e.g. smart energy services, electricity grid services, contracting, and maintenance. As much as 99.6 percent of the ashes from Oulun Energia’s Toppila power plant were utilized e.g. in civil engineering, and as forest fertilizer in peatlands in granulated form. Karppimaa has a position in peat industry association Turveteollisuusliitto’s board, and he was a founding member and board member of Finnish Bioindustries FIB. These associations were joined into the Bioenergy Association of Finland, where Karppimaa was also a founding member and board member.

Sakari Kiviniemi has been the CEO and shareholder of Rakeistus Oy since 2015. Rakeistus Oy offers a new type of ash granulation method that can be integrated in industrial processes along with a complete service all the way to end product distribution. Potential uses for the granulation equipment include e.g. ash granulation into fertilizer, technical construction, and symbiotic products. The granulation process turns what formerly would have been disposed of as ash dust into a solid, dispersable soil conditioning product. Sakari has previously worked in lumber trade and as the CEO at Oplax Oy, a packaging and pallet industry company. He has a degree in timber engineering.

Anne is a Co-founder and Principal Consultant of Ethica,  a circular economy consultancy operating internationally across private and public sectors.  Some of the latest projects include Circular Economy Ecosystem development as part of the European Raw Materials programme; a circular district concept and business ecosystem development with the City of Tampere and collaboration with the Finnish Technology Industries.  Ethica was highly commended at the prestigious Circulars2016 competition through the Relooping Fashion project focusing on building the future of textile industry, and the project was also chosen as one of the most innovative circular projects in Sustainia 100 publication. Anne was one of the ten international experts invited to Reunion Island to contribute to the circular economy strategy of the region in 2016. Anne has also written the ‘Boosting circular design for a circular economy’ report (2015) together with the Dutch partner called De Groene Zaak. Anne is RSA Fellow and expert at Solved Cleantech Network as well as FISS (Finnish Industrial Symbiosis System) Network. In her previous role she used to work as a Sustainability Manager at the University of Westminster, London. Anne has Master’s degrees in International Relations and Dance.

Matti Latva-aho received the M.Sc., Lic.Tech. and Dr. Tech (Hons.) degrees in Electrical Engineering from the University of Oulu, Finland in 1992, 1996 and 1998, respectively. From 1992 to 1993, he was a Research Engineer at Nokia Mobile Phones, Oulu, Finland after which he joined Centre for Wireless Communications (CWC) at the University of Oulu. Prof. Latva-aho was Director of CWC during the years 1998-2006 and Head of Department for Communication Engineering until August 2014. Currently he is Professor of Digital Transmission Techniques at the University of Oulu. He serves as Academy of Finland Professor in 2017 – 2022. His research interests are related to mobile broadband communication systems and currently his group focuses on 5G systems research. Prof. Latva-aho has published 300+ conference or journal papers in the field of wireless communications. He received Nokia Foundation Award in 2015 for his achievements in mobile communications research.

Kaj Råtts, Master of Science, is the Process Owner of the Reliability Process at Efora, since January 2016. Efora improves industrial competitiveness with smarter maintenance solutions and life cycle management for Stora Enso. Kaj joined Efora in 2013 as a Site Manager for Efora’s site in Oulu. He was responsible for the mill maintenance operations and life-cycle services until September 2016. Before that he developed service and reliability at ABB Full Service site in Harjavalta as a Development Manager and Reliability Engineer. Due to his background, Kaj has a a solid expertise in developing and managing service processes for industrial customers, by improving the efficiency and operational reliability of the production equipment through smarter maintenance processes.

Innovations and Science behind seizing Market Opportunities on the field of Bioenergy and Waste Management (6.10. Seminar II)

Mikko Ahokas has an extremely broad experience from the field of bioenergy and waste management. He is a founding partner (2005-2011) of an energy company St1 Biofuels. He worked there as a technical director and was in charge of creating a concept and processes for the pioneering waste to ethanol based fuel plants. He believes that science and innovative technologies are playing a key role for the future waste management and bioenergy sector development. The latest years (2011-) he has been  conducted several feasibility studies, searched investors for the sector, done technology benchmarking studies, and participated business transaction processes by doing technical and environmental due diligences. He is convinced that collaboration between top experts can solve many of the current challenges. In his private consultancy business (MACON) his intention is to create a network of highly skilled professionals in the sector of waste management and bioenergy. He is active in many Expert services, for example Solved, BCC, Mintebi, and GL Group. Mikko has a Bachelor in Environmental technology and a Master degree in Biology and Environmental Sciences. Currently he is doing his doctoral studies in Bioprocess engineering at the University of Oulu. He is a board member in Finnish Waste Management Association and a National member delegate in International Solid Waste Association (ISWA).  He is also counting on entrepreneurial ways of driving a positive change in the local economy. He is a founding partner and acts as a Chairman in Sangen Oy and Tornio Brewery (Tornion Panimo Oy)

In the period 2005 – 2008 she has served as Deputy Mayor of City of Oulu. Anu Fredrikson is the Director of the Arctic Economic Council Secretariat located in Tromsø, Norway. Anu has previously worked with foreign and security policy, issues related to energy and economy, climate and development policies as well as the Arctic. Prior to joining the AEC, Anu worked as an Advisor in Political Affairs and Arctic Policy at the Embassy of Finland in Oslo.  She has a Master’s degree in International Relations from the University of Tampere in Finland and holds a Certificat d’Etudes Politiques from Institut d’Etudes Politiques de Lille in France.

Member of the European Parliament, Sirpa Pietikäinen (M.Sc. Econ., Helsinki School of Economics) is Member in the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs, Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety, in the Committee on Women’s Rights and Gender Equality and in the Special Committee on Tax Rulings and Other Measures Similar in Nature or Effect. As the current key positions of trust she is Member of the Board at Kone Oyj, Fortum Advisory Council and Lammi Savings Bank. Furthermore, Sirpa is Chairman of the Board at The Finnish Lifelong Learning Foundation and at KONE Foundation, The Advisory Board of the Saari Residence. She is Lecturer in Negotiations Theories at Aalto University School of Business and University of Eastern Finland.  Previously Sirpa served as Vice Chairman in the Committee of Internal Market and Consumer protection and as Member in the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety at European Parliament. Earlier Sirpa Pietikäinen was Member of Finnish Parliament in 1983–2003 and Minister of the Environment of Finnish Government 1991–1995.

Dr. Seppo Yrjölä is a passionate innovator with a background in research, strategy and business, Seppo Yrjölä is Sr. Principal Innovator at Nokia. Seppo has been with Nokia for 28 years. He incubates and steers opportunities externally with customers, partners and governments with the purpose of driving growth by innovating holistically from technology to business models. Previously as a head of wireless technology for the Networks division at Nokia, his role required him to look beyond the product roadmap and identify what new trends, technologies and tools were on the horizon, and determine and validate how those future opportunities fit into the Nokia pipeline. His current research is focused in the area of future radios with cognitive network business opportunities and potential disruptions as an important aspect to scout. He holds a M.Sc. degree in electrical engineering and a Doctoral degree in telecommunications from the University of Oulu. Seppo has been awarded over €10 million in competitive research funding as the lead investigator, authored more than 50 peer-reviewed publications, and holds several patents in the radio domain.

Toni Hemminki, Master of Science, Tech. (Energy and Environment), has served as President and Chief Executive Officer of Fennovoima Oy since October 2014. Prior to joining Fennovoima, he held various positions at SSAB (former Rautaruukki Oyj) during 2001 – 2014. During those years he expanded his experience from expert and research and product development positions to leading positions as VP, Energy and Environment in 2007 – 2011; SVP, Technology, Energy and Environment in 2011 – 2013; Chief Strategy Officer in 2013 – 2014 and Deputy CTO and Head of Energy, Environment, Health and Safety from September 2014, on, until joining Fennovoima. In addition to wide management experience at SSAB, Mr. Hemminki has held a few positions of trust as chairman of the board of directors at Raahen Voima Oy (2014) and ElFi Oy (2009 – 2011) and as member of the board of directors at Manga LNG Oy (2014), FIMECC Oy (2013 – 2014), Fennovoima Oy (2013 – 2014) and Voimaosakeyhtiö SF (2012 – 2014).
